Artist Statement:
My paintings are exploring themes of human relationship to nature relating to the histories of the invention of landscape.
Each painting is dynamic in scale and built up through multiple processes of applying paint and with a particular emphasis on dynamic painted surfaces. I develop compositions by collaging images influenced by observational drawings, photographs, nature writing and art history; each reference is purposefully interwoven within the painting and relates to my own experiences of a journey by walking through nature.
Collage is a central device to play with tensions and contradictions of artificiality within human-made landscapes.
At the core of my practice I’m looking towards literature and nature writing on ecology and rewilding to underpin my narratives and to question my own obsessions with landscape.
